How to Foster Inclusivity for Women in Tech

We've all seen the stats: women are underrepresented in tech. But it's not just about numbers. It's about creating a space where every brilliant mind, regardless of gender, race, and culture can thrive. While there are undoubtedly strong and influential women leaders in tech, the overall representation of women in the industry remains disproportionately low. Many talented women face systemic barriers, such as unconscious bias, gender stereotypes, and a lack of mentorship, which hinder their progress and limit their opportunities for leadership roles. Here's how we can all chip in:


  1. Call Out the BS

    Microaggressions, those subtle yet harmful comments and behaviors, can significantly impact women in tech. Whether it's a dismissive remark about a woman's coding abilities or a condescending explanation of a concept, such actions create a hostile work environment. It's essential to address these issues head-on, calling them out gently but firmly. Additionally, unconscious bias training can be a powerful tool. By recognizing and understanding our own biases, we can actively work to dismantle them, fostering a more inclusive and equitable workplace.

  2. Be a Sponsor, Not Just a Mentor

    Mentorship, while invaluable, is just the beginning. True sponsorship involves actively advocating for a woman's career advancement by championing her for promotions and leadership roles. By opening doors and creating opportunities, sponsors empower women to reach their full potential. Additionally, amplifying their voices through sharing their work, nominating them for awards, and providing platforms to speak is crucial. This visibility not only boosts their confidence but also inspires others and challenges gender stereotypes.

  3. Create a Culture of Belonging

    Diverse teams, a melting pot of ideas, ignite innovation. A harmonious blend of genders, races, and backgrounds fosters a richer work environment where unique perspectives converge. Flexibility, the key to unlocking potential, empowers individuals to balance work and life, attracting and retaining top talent, regardless of gender.

  4. Challenge the Status Quo

    It's time to challenge the status quo. Why are tech conferences dominated by male speakers? Why are leadership roles predominantly held by men? Let's break these norms and create a more inclusive tech industry. Supporting women-led initiatives is key. By attending women-in-tech events, investing in female-founded startups, and championing their causes, we can empower women, foster innovation, and drive positive change.

  5. Be an Ally

    To truly foster inclusivity, it's imperative to actively listen to and understand the specific challenges women encounter within the tech industry. By empathizing with their experiences, other genders in tech can leverage their privileged positions to advocate for equality. Whether it's challenging gender stereotypes, promoting equal pay, or creating a supportive work environment, other genders can play a pivotal role in dismantling barriers and empowering women to thrive.


A report by Accenture highlights that the representation of women in the technology sector has declined over the years. Women represent only 32% of the tech workforce. Currently, women occupy only 16% of engineering roles and 27% of computing positions within U.S. companies.[1]  Remember, inclusivity isn't just a buzzword; it's a commitment. By taking these steps, we can create a tech industry where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered.
